Foreign Types - Using DNA Results from Other Laboratories

Always request a copy of DNA results when purchasing an animal or semen straw.

If the DNA was tested at VGL, the case number is all you need to use those results as part of a DNA Match or for Parentage Verification.

If the DNA was tested at another laboratory using an ISAG standardized panel of DNA markers, VGL can usually make use of these results for parentage verification.*

You have three options for submitting DNA results from another laboratory for VGL to use for parentage verification:

  • (Cattle Only) Use MyVGL to submit a PDF file (either original from the laboratory or a scanned copy). You will type in the DNA results online, and VGL will verify what you have entered against the PDF before approving for entry in VGL's database. Price $2.00
  • (Horse and Cattle Only) Use MyVGL to pay online and then mail, fax or email DNA results to VGL. Price $10.00
  • Mail or fax DNA results to VGL and pay by check or submit credit card authorization form. Contact us for necessary forms and information. Price $10.00

* Note: The VGL will make every effort to use DNA types from other laboratories for parentage analyses. Occasionally, because of incompatible laboratory procedures and markers reported, we may be unable to provide conclusive parentage analyses using another laboratory's DNA types. Without the ability to retest a parent sample to verify results, we may not be able to complete cases with unconfirmed mismatches. Because of this limitation, if the parent tested by another laboratory is alive or is a deceased bull with available frozen semen, we recommend submitting a sample for testing instead of relying on another laboratory's results for parentage analysis purposes.
